Pesticides and Toxic Chemicals Control (Prohibited Pesticides) Order No. 22 of 2006 made under the Pesticides and Toxic Chemicals Control Act 2000 (No. 13 of 2000) prohibits the importation, sale and use of Pentachlorophenol or any substance in any form containing pentachlorophenol.

Summary of known hazards and risks to human health:

Pentachlorophenol has been subject to control actions primarily because of high toxicity to human and animals. Development and reproductive effects and liver and kidney pathology were noted in animal studies. However, the compound is also highly toxic to aquatic organisms. Pentachlorophenol contains several highly toxic dioxins which have shown carcinogenic effects in experimental animals.

Reduced or no exposure to this chemical by humans and other mammals.
